Re: Free blacks Kentucky
In Response To: Free blacks Kentucky ()
For a friend, I researched his free black family, headed by Spotswood Penman/Pennman of Danville, Mercer County, Kentucky. The family had an ancestor, Jean Penman, that was recorded on the 1810 census in Kentucky. According to Carter Woodson's "Free Negro Heads of Families in the United States in 1830" there were quite a few free African Americans in Kentucky at the 1830s.
