I also have free ancestors from Culpeper COunty, VA (Shaw, Lawler, Brooks). It is a challenge. There is a cohabitation register online at the Library of VA website that I have found one ancestor on. That is only free negro register I know about. There are several books that might have additional information. I just came across a William Asher on the 1820 census who was free. Good luck
