Abstract: Thomas Williams, better know as Thomas McCowan, purchased himself and is now a free man of color. Residents of Charlestown assert that he "is a useful & convenient person to the citizens of the town" and "in no wise mischievous." His wife, however, is a slave. They ask that he be permitted to remain in Virginia.
