Abstract: Emancipated by Philip Vass, who died some twelve years before, Patty Daniel remained enslaved with others cited in the will until October 1842, when the Superior Court of Chancery ruled Vass's will valid. The others left Virginia, but she was married to free man of color, Terry Daniel, a self-sufficient shoemaker who "bears a good character." She is fifty-five years old and has children in bondage. She asks to remain with her husband and children.
