I believe that most historians would agree that the majority of Americans of African descent prior to 1865, were enslaved individuals. Documents reflect that there were African Americans serving as indentured servants during that time period, but they were the minority of the black population in the U.S., and many of them were ultimately enslaved. There were also individuals who were brought to the country as slaves and generations prior to 1865, were freed, but they never made up the majority of blacks in the US. Who were the blacks brought to this country as free, non-indentured persons and for what purpose were they brought here?
