He shows in Hertford in 1860 & 1880, and as you said, in Boykins, Southampton Co., VA by 1900.
He was obviously free, but if his wife was a slave and they married prior to 1865 in Hertford, you're out of luck. I have a copy of Ms. White's book and there are no cohabititation records for Hertford Co., that was the case for a lot of the NC Counties.
