Re: South Carolina Egyptiams
In Response To: Re: South Carolina Egyptiams ()
In my line of Cooks (don't know the earliest wives' surnames) there was the legend of "Portuguese/Spanish, American Indian, and Gypsy, along with the tale of ship-wrecked pirates off the coast of South Carolina. They apparently came from the Pee Dee region down into what was Beaufort District, SC. I say they came from the Pee Dee due to the use of the name "Gadi" a common shortened name for Gideon, used only in the Pee Dee region families known as being Melungeon tied, even though they were in SC very early and never moved up into the region where they acquired that name, Melungeon. I fully expected to find the legend not true, or at least only partly true. However, an autosomal dna test proved these ancestors (had to be this line due to process of elimination) were indeed all these things, Portuguese, Spanish, Eastern American Indian, Brahmin Indian, and the "gypsy" markers of Croatia, etc. that,, coupled with the India one [seems to indicate Gypsy to be true. There is also Sephardic Jew (Portuguese) North African (Moroccan) and sub-Saharan African. But I wanted to point out that the Portuguese/Spanish legend is indeed true. I have a high percentage of this. I am not the only one to have dna evidence of this fact. Messages In This Thread
