There was no law requiring this is North Carolina. In the 1850's I believe, there was a law passed that allowed free blacks to petition the court to become slaves, but that is the closest law that I am aware of on this subject. So far in my research, I've only seen 2 people do this. You might want to check my blog (below) as there are some old posts about laws in NC regarding free blacks.
