Dear A C Johnson: Thank you so very much for your shared research. I hope that the AfriGeneas family book marks your suggestions. I'm a fan of Loren Schweninger's research and the article from the National Archives is very informative. Also thanks for reminding all of us about "Becoming Free,Remaining Free:Manumission and Enslavement in New Orleans ,1846-1862" by Judith Kelleher Schafer. I have her book and often refer to it. The purpose of my research is to uncover how many free persons of color were literally re-enslaved slaves at the beginning of the Civil War. Surely the people mentioned in your references and certainly the ones from Louisiana did not FREELY rush to the confederate side (like so many neo-confederates claim). Thank you again for your input.
