Abstract: Dick Greenway, a free man of color, petitions for permission to remain in Virginia. Fifty years ago, he states, his father, a free black man named Simon Parham, married a slave woman belonging to Robert Greenway. Through "diligence and industry," Parham eventually purchased her freedom. Twenty-five years ago, Parham purchased his son "with the intention to restore him to his liberty." In his will Parham freed his son. Dick Greenway states that he does not want to leave friends, siblings, and the attachments of a lifetime.
