Abstract: On 16 September 1826, jailer William Morgan committed Eben Jones, a citizen of Pennsylvania, to jail as a runaway slave. After advertising him for the specified period and keeping him locked up for more than a year, Morgan discovered that Jones was not a slave but a free man. On 28 November 1827, Jones was released. The jailer asks for remuneration of expenses totaling $129.75.
