Abstract: In 1826, Littleton P. Henderson purchased a free black man named Jim Outten at public auction in Accomack County. Many free people of color residing in the county were sold at the auction, conducted by the overseers of the poor, but unlike them Outten was at the time in Baltimore. Later, Outten sues in forma pauperis in Accomack County, and obtains his freedom. Arguing that it was against the law to sell a black man who was not in custody, Henderson asks to be reimbursed.
