Abstract: In 1822, Dillard Gordon, a free man of color, married Floreal Floretta, a woman of color, then about seventeen years of age. The daughter of a white man, Floreal had been emancipated in 1814, as provided for in the will of Philip Henshaw, who bequeathed her half of his estate. Gordon says that with such property she would not become a burden to the county, and asks that she be permitted to remain in the state.
