Abstract: Emancipated in 1813, Lucy Wright and Lucy Claiborne remained in Virginia, despite the law requiring them to leave, because they did not have the means to emigrate. Now each is the mother of two children, ranging in age from seven years to ten months. The overseers of the poor took them up as slaves, while the city court of Richmond declared their children free. They fear being sold away from their children, and ask for permission to remain in the state with "all the rights and privileges of free Born Blacks."
