Abstract: Free black Samuel Johnston owns his wife, Patty, daughter Lucy, and son Samuel. He would have freed them long ago if he had not been intimidated by the law requiring their "speedy departure from the Commonwealth." He now asks that they be freed, and permitted to remain in Virginia.
