ROSS/KINLEY river travel to Allegheny City PA

A few months ago I posted a query on the Brick Wall Forum. I wrote to the group that I can find my ancestor Henry Kinley and his family, in 1840 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. To my surprise the whole family disappears until 1870 when I can only locate one son, George Henry Kinley. I knew that he had more siblings based on the 1840 Census but was unsure what happened to them. I also knew that George Henry's mom's name was Sarah Ann (Ross) born in Chillicothie (which one unsure - but believe it is Ross County - Chillicothie) Ohio sometime in the early 1800s. I knew this from marriage records and cemetery records. She turns back up in 1880 living with George Henry. I was extremely frustrated because 30 years of history were missing.

A few people suggested that I look at towns and cities along the river since Portsmouth was a river town. So after months of searching I think I found the family in 1850 in Allegheny City, PA.

Sarah Kinly 39 F Mu OH
Frances Kinly 19 F Mu OH
Mary Kinly 17 F Mu OH
David Kinly 14 M Mu OH
Henry Kinly 12 M Mu OH
William Kinly 18 M Mu OH
Caroline Kinly 7 F Mu OH
Joseph Kinly 4 M Mu OH

Part of the problem is on three different indices they are listed differently KIMBY, KENNEDY, and KINDY. Knowing this I looked at the 1860 Census for the whole family. Poof...they are gone again! (I just may have eye fatigue as well from looking at so many cities along the river). Many of the children are marrying age. Does anyone out there have extensive knowledge of the Allegheny records for 1850 & 1860? Would love to hear from you about what resources are available for this time frame. Thanks in advance.
