Re: Colonial era Hathcocks
In Response To: Colonial era Hathcocks ()
I just finished reading the Queen Anne's County colonial court records and was again reminded how common it was for white women to have children by slaves. Case after case of white servant women who had children by white men and a portion of them had children by slaves. So many white women married to slaves in 1664 that they passed a law against it. The threat of sale for life as a slave did not work, so it was changed to sale into slavery for 7 years. At least a dozen women married to slaves circa 1690 in Maryland. It is amazing how we have erased this from our history.
