Thanks Denise!
If you saw how they spelled her name on the 1930 census, page 3 of the St Francis township, you'd laugh hysterically like me. It looks like "Myrttllee" and then written over.
It amazes me that people I've talked to in the hometown remember her, but only that she died young and left my grandfather with two babies... but not what her name really was. I guess it's because they're up in age now. All they remember of her family is that they were "The Powells".
Richard had given me some death records from Arkansas earlier in the year and there is a Merdie(which is what my grandfather called her) listed as dying in Phillips County on 1/15/1932 which would be her. What her real name was, still can't say.
I also saw a Bertise Powell listed in another township but she would have been too old and was born in Louisana, mine was born in Ms. Then I saw some more Merties in the area and am looking into them also. The only thing I can figure out is that she must have been listed in the home with a step-parent or another relative and I haven't found her yet.
By the way, that William who was listed on the 1920 census with Calvin and all his other sons was indeed my grandfather Eugene. I found Calvin with his family in Desoto County Ms listed as Tommie, short for his middle name Thomas. Desoto County is closer to Helena than Quitman County and the other surrounding counties are Panola,Coahoma and Tallahatchie. No luck in those counties for either Calvin, Evaline or Mertise. So back to the drawing board and more searching.
