Been a long time since I cooked Mac and cheese so cannot post the recipe.

I do recall as a child that Macaroni and cheese was ALWAYS on the Sunday dinner menu. It was a deep dish casserole and delicious to the max. My mother used elbow macaroni cooked in a double boiler, strained in a colander and arranged in three layers with a mixture of eggs, milk, butter with extra strong cheddar cheese. I seem to recall that the topping had cheese mixed with crushed cornflakes or bread crumbs and the remainder of the milk mixture was drizzled on top. One could cut the finished product in slices.
