Re: Cha-Cha or Chow-Chow
In Response To: Cha-Cha or Chow-Chow ()
My Chow-Chow story.
My sister and I heard that there were places you could go and pick vegetables (Northern California) and off we went. We set out to pick peas, but came across a plowed field strewn with green tomatoes. Well, our minds said chow-chow since it had been some time since we'd had any. We asked about the tomatoes and were told we could have those on the ground for free. So we picked and picked, all for free.
When we got home we called our aunt for a recipe. She didn't have one, but knew how to make it. She had to come do it, couldn't tell us. So by the time we bought enough cabbage, and everything else we needed, it more than made up for our "free" green tomatoes.
The picking place also sold chow-chow. Sadly that place went out of business in the last few years and they stopped growing vegetables and started "growing houses." So, no more old-time chow-chow to buy.
