I remember.. the apple pies made with dried apples. And it took a long time after my grandma's death to realize the reason her biscuits and pie crust were so 'great' is because at that time 'Lard' was used. Shortening came almost at the end of her life. For me there is a big difference in taste and texture. But I do watch my health closer now, so as much grease as possible is not in my diet.
