Questions regarding DNA tests

Date: Tuesday, 28 March 2006, at 10:48 a.m.

Folks,

Rather than combing through 340 messages containing the acronym 'DNA', I'll take the lazy route of asking a few questions here. Besides, what may have been posted around message '64' or '127' might now be outdated.

I've heard and read bits and pieces where DNA analysis can chart your ancestry by percentages or back to a specific part of Africa.

So, here are my two questions:

1. What can a DNA analysis tell me, genealogy-wise?

2. Is it possible to establish relationships with otherwise unknown relatives who have also submitted to DNA analyses? That is, do some institutions share their results when there is a match?

I've put off this DNA stuff way too long, so I guess I'll have it done as my 50th birthday present to myself.

Robert
