Re: DNA Testing (Scam or Not)
In Response To: DNA Testing (Scam or Not) ()

I've had an expensive education in DNA testing. But I still think it worthwhile, for me anyway.

I first tested with African Ancestry, and as posted before, got exactly what I wanted to know. But now I want to know more, so I need those confusing numbers you mention. My results from African Ancestry did not give me that.

To test 3 cousins' DNA, I tried another company which had two types of tests. Not being educated on the difference, I chose the one that seemed to give me what I wanted. Again, I did not get those confusing numbers, but I did get a Haplogroup letter + the continent of Africa. Not what I wanted. Back to African Ancestry for those three.

If you want to possibly connect with some unknown relatives, you need those confusing numbers, because that is what you plug into the online databases to search for relatives or let them find you.

So I have just sent my dna to the National Geographic project and may do the same with at least one cousin. Her mtDNA is the line for my paternal grandmother about whom we know not much beyond her name.
