Thanks Trish, for posting my earlier message.
As I stated in the original post, there are merits in each test. Fortunately even with the HVR1 test from National Genographic
I do think that for a person on a budget they will find a "bargain" with the $99 National Genographc test, but then to "refine" the test there is an additional$75 charge. This $99 is still small in comparison to the cost for the African Ancestry test. ($349)
However----in many cases the results from African Ancestry might be the results that one is really looking for---the identfication of "where" in Africa one's ancestors are from. It is more expensive, but the test is more involved with more scientific laboratory analysis, as well. The markers are then compared against other samples in a large database that have an African geographic designation. As a result, the more labor-intensive, the greater the cost.
To the genealogist on a budget----National Genographic is the cheapest and quickest way to go, but to get what you really might want to know about African lineage---one might have to "save up" and go ahead with the African Ancestry test. My cousins, the Reeds made it a family project and collected donations from relatives throughout the country. When the moeny was available, the samples were collected and submitted. (Cousin Mel, you can talk about that)
