Re: Which DNA test should I use?
In Response To: Which DNA test should I use? ()
Deirdre - Once you have made the decision about which test to take, you still face the question of where to get tested and how to use the results.
If you are doing a Surname test (yNA) - No matter which testing company you use, you should post your results in the public databases, as the folks who share common ancestry with you may have been tested at another company. There are four public databases which I didn't spot a mention of elsewhere in the postings. (Two of those allow you to post your results - no matter where you were tested and the other two list there results, so you can check for a match.) I have listed those four, with links at our Tools page at
Those same two companies also have recently set up databases for mtDNA results - here's the mtDNA page:
These pages are a subset of the World Families Network site at:
There is a good bit of reference information there - two things may be of particular interest.
1. A search feature that lets you look for Surname DNA Projects that are underway
2. A set of Freq Asked Questions (menu on left side of the page)
Hope this helps. Regards, Terry
