African American DNA Research Forum

Re: L3f1
In Response To: L3f1 ()

Howdy! My cousin, who is a maternal descendant of my 3g-grandmother from the Bahamas also tested as L3f1. I found a scholarly article that listed the ethnic groups in Africa (and elsewhere) where they found folks with this haplogroup. They say that L3f started in East Africa, but some L3f1 people moved to West Africa about 10-20K years ago. Other L3f1 people crossed the Red Sea into the Arabian Peninsula, so there are Arabs with this haplogroup, too.

The article is "The making of the African mtDNA Landscape" by Antonio Salas, et al. in American Journal of Human Genetics 71:1082-1111, 2002. There's probably been interesting research since then. We should find out!

Here's the list of ethnic groups (I broke it down by region)
West Africans
Yoruba
Songhai
Senegalese
Kanuri
Fulbe
Tuareg
Hausa

East Africans
Turkana
Ethiopians
Somalians
Nubians

Southeast Africa
Ronga
Shona
Chopi

Middle East
Iraq
Yemen
West Jordan

Americans (African diaspora)
Garfuna (live in Belize and Panama)
African Brazilians
White Brazilians
African Americans
Caribbean (that's my 3g-grandma)
