I just received my DNA results and it says that my maternal genetic ancestry points to the Tikar people of modern day Cameroon. Initially I was sceptic about the result as I had never heard of British Caribbean slaves originating from Cameroon. Historians consistently argue that the bulk of black Jamaicans have their roots in modern day Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.Hence my initial reservation is uderstandable. However, after conducting research I realized that the Tikar homeland occupies portions of the Northwest,Adamawa and Center provinces of Cameroon. These areas almost all border on Nigeria and thus it is easy to understand that slave traders did indeed penetrate this region and most likely marched the slaves from here to the port of Calabar (in modern Nigeria),for shipping to the British Caribbean colonies.
