African American DNA Research Forum

Re: How many tests have you taken?

I was hesitant about doing the DNA testing mainly because of cost. It cost $349 plus shipping, through African Ancestry. I had attended the Afro American Historical and Genealogy Society Conference this past Oct. where Dr Rich Kittles gave a workshop on what his company does and the confidentiality of the information. This was my second time in one of his workshops. Well I took the plunge and I can say now I am happy to KNOW where my grgrgrandma descended from. I am an african descendant not by wondering but by scientific testing. My people came from Sierre Leone, W.Africa. Dr Kittles also sent a chart showing my DNA tracking, along with many other items to tell me about the people of my ancestor's. My ancestor's are from the Mende and Temne people. To better explain, the slaves who were aboard the ship AMISTAD, were part of my peoples village. The percentage possibility of being related to these people, for me, is 99.7%. I am the 1st born granddaughter of my grandmother. To give accurate results there are guidelines you must follow that is given in the directions when you receive the kit. If YOU do not follow these rules it will give you a false reading and YOU will have to pay a second time. I am giving all of my family who are blood related to me a copy of my letter telling them where in AFRICA we are descended from, as a Christmas gift. In the workshop, Dr Kittles said no information about any person's will be sold to companies are organization. All names are kept on file under a KIT NUMBER only. Hopefully this will make more of my family more interested in family research. I am pleased.
