Hi Angela!

You wrote: I understand that Family Tree DNA does that. Do you know if anything is similar with results reported by the National Genographic project?

I had my mtDNA test done through the Genographic Project ($107 with tax). The test is conducted by the Family Tree DNA company. After you receive your results (it took about 10 weeks for mine), you can enter your data into the Migration Database (National Geographic interest) and then you have an option of entering it into the Family Tree DNA Database. Once you do that, they tell you what they called your kit # and send you a password so you can look through their site too. I just read that FTDNA discontinued its $149 mtDNA test because it is the same one being offered through National Geographic's Genographic Project. In any case, you get your Haplogroup, but nothing specific on African origins. I'm an L3 with mutations from the reference group at 16223T, 16265T, 16519C, and 16527T. My next step will be a test with African Ancestry, but with all of this I still wonder if we have enough samples to really distinguish between differences between African ethnic groups.
