Tribe, nation, people or group; use whatever term you like.

Most of Africa is patrilineal now. The Berber speakers including, of course, the Tuareg are matrilineal. Many Bantu and the Igbo are matrilineal. Perhaps, in the distant past all Africa was matrilineal. Traditionally across Africa, kings were chosen matrilineally.

Most African societies understand what happened in the Americas with slavery. So, despite being patrilineal if a African American could only trace heritage through their mother it would be OK. Don't be reluctant to test the Y chromosome if you think the result will point to a European ancestor. This is also part of our history. Some men of European and Jewish descent did marry Black women when slavery ended.
Plus, I do think some of those slavemasters did "love" those women they got on top of in some "strange kind of" way. Some people did not
believe the Sally Hemmings/Thomas Jefferson story. Some people did not believe slavemasters in general got those slave women pregnant. African American male Y chrosome tests have validated these claims.

Black America is ever mixing into the greater population. Decades from now it will be impossible for some our descendants to trace their African heritage through DNA due to interracial unions. These tests are an important part of our collective histories.
