African American DNA Research Forum
White By Culture says DNA
I am white by culture. I found through 23&me that I have 0.8% African ancestry. My parents were both deceased before all this DNA stuff, and before my genealogy research, so I don't know whether it's through my mother or father, or both. I do know that my parents met through an organization in which they demonstrated in the 1950s against racial prejudice in Saint Louis, and our parents always told us that, with pride.
As I investigated my ancestry, I found that, despite my many Mennonite & Quaker ancestors, I still do have some ancestors who had slaves. I am so sorry for that on a personal level, but I cannot change it.
So, here is the thing I can change--I want to make sure that everything I know about my ancestors' slaves is accessible, in case (a) we are related and (b) it might help someone find their ancestors.
And, if there is anything I can do to help further someone's research, I stand ready to assist. I live in the Saint Louis area, I am retired, and I will do look-ups in the Saint Louis area for anyone who contacts me with a question.
