Re: Grandson's Y DNA
In Response To: Re: Grandson's Y DNA ()

Lyle and others,
I do understand about the Y testing as I am a surname Admin. for 5 groups at FTDNA. I intend to upload Tevin's results to their Family Finder but not sure about the Y for now.

I was a Beta tester at 23andme and have 13 kits there. Tevin is my first close family member with substantial AA dna and for right now I am feeling my way with which matches are his AA and which are EU altho' some of that is clear. Two of my sons and their daughters are tested at 23andme so we have clear phasing of my genome versus theirs and their other parent Tevin's mom, my daughter has not tested yet but that could be next. Her father is Swiss and I have not yet detected him in the mix.

Interestingly enough when his RF loaded I was very surprised that his relationship to me and my sister ( my only sibling) is smaller than my granddaughters and either of us. 23andme called us "first cousin" at 17 %.My granddaughters and I were 21 and 22%.
I see some forum posts that AA segments may recombine more quickly than some other cultures.

If that is the case ( and I suspect it may be partially) then a mismatch on a single SNP can break a segment into smaller segments some of which may be too small to qualify under 23andme's matching rules.

I then put Tevin's genome at I facilitate 3 Ancestor Projects there) and find we look much more closely related so am convinced it is 23andme software interpretation that is to blame. At we have substantial runs on EVERY chromosome which is not apparent at 23andme due to the segment mismatch rule.

I corrected my relationship to Grandmother of course. Tevin is 17 now and although he is excited about testing the DNA and likes what I have found in the past about his paternal line, he will not be working on it himself. He will be pleased about result I am sure.

Any thoughts on this?

I am wondering as a result if anyone has any thoughts on whether or not the AA to AA results are smaller or just the EU to AA?23andme only? The cousin matches which seem to be AA seem to be very robust.
