Re: Calling All L3's!!!
In Response To: Re: Calling All L3's!!! ()

Quote from a Project Manager from the FTDNA Family Finder project:
"I have over 300 matches and have not been able to pinpoint one common ancestor with any of them so far, and I can identify every single one of my 32 great great great great grandparents! On the other hand, my known 5th cousin got tested and she does not share any detectable autosomal DNA with me!"
This 3-4-5 cousin and autosomal DNA matching process is so confusing to me. And reading postings and replies to those postings doesn’t seem to help in clearing up my confusion.

Taking the above quote and applying it to my ancestor chart I see that what is referred to as one the project manager’s 32 great great great great grandparents equates to my 3rd great grandparents.

Looking at ONE set of my 16 sets of 3rd great grandparents and comparing those two individuals to three (3) other different individuals who are “known” 3rd cousin’s once removed (3Cx1R ) according to my genealogy software program (Roots Magic) shows they, (3rd great grandparents), are the ONLY individuals we have directly in common on OUR respective 5 generation ancestor charts.

Going two (2) generations deeper with these cousin’s children and grandchildren we now have 32 and 64 sets of “grandparents”, these would be my 4th and 5th cousin’s once removed and the only two (2) individuals we have directly in common, again that set of my 3rd great grandparents.

None of these folks have taken the autosomal DNA tests, but each 3Cx1R, all males, with a son and grandson of each, has taken the Y-DNA test and we all have the same Y-DNA haplogroup signature. We are the descendants of our DIRECT common male ancestor, that known 3rd great grandfather of mine.

Would each of these five (5) individuals show up as 3-4-5th cousin matches for me should they take the Family Finder and/or 23&me autosomal DNA tests? I have no idea. They do show as matches at 37 marker FTDNA Y-DNA level of testing. Autosomal matches ...... an interesting question and one I intend to pursue. :\

I now have to convince the ‘cousin’s’ to do the Family Finder test.
