That is true that autosomal dna testing can be frustrating for your novice and experience geneologist. It is most likely that her know 5th cousin did not appear is because of FTDNA (as well as 23andme) threshold for HIR SNPS. Threshold being 5cm with 700 SNPS for "distant" and 7 centimorgans 700 SNPS for "5th". DNA has a funny way of recombining As for making connections as your adminstrator stated that can be very hard especially if the other person dosen't have a clue! On 23andme I have a 4th cousin who was adopted but with looking at some of my other matches that I share we recognized we shared on the exact same chromosome with another indivdual thus making a "starting point" connection. This other cousin and I a very close in making that connection. For me it's all about finding the way all my ancestor's may have went. You also have to take into account non-paternal events. Hey Jefferson isn't suppose to be my surname it's another man that wasn't even my father's dad thus making connections even more difficult. Yes the database is more conducive for Europeans after all they test the most.... I have fun with the ride.. I even have a Finnish ancestor most likely from slave trade...
