Yep, when you get to the 3-4-5 cousin relationships it is virtually impossible to determine who the common ancestor is thru the autosomal results reported by Family Finder.

Y-DNA 3-4-5th cousin would relate to a DIRECT male ancestor. (1 person per generation)

mtDNA 3-4-5th cousin would relate to a DIRECT female ancestor. (1 person per generation)

Autosomal 3-4-5th cousin would relate to any ancestor, male or female.(1 of 64 persons for 6 generations)

Determining who that common ancestor is requires some very in-depth genealogical research in both cases. One is very fortunate if they have been able to obtain the genealogical information for all of their ancestors through the 16 sets of their ggg grandparents.

And to say how a match with a contact from Family Finder is determined I would think you both would need to have the same degree (depth) of genealogical information.

Click on the PDF icon - my 6 generation ancestor chart will show all of the missing links I would have for determining where my Family Finder matches might possibly exist.
