For those of you who are in haplogroup I, there's another level of refinement you can do on these results. If you only have 12 markers, look at DYS388. If it has 14 repeats, you are almost certainly in haplogroup I1a. If you were also tested for DYS455. A value of 8 repeats is virtually diagnostic for haplogroup I1a. If you have these markers, please consider joining the Haplogroup I1a Project at Family Tree DNA. The link is attached to this messsage.
In general, I highly recommend testing at least 25 markers. For the West family that I've read about here, consider 37 or even 67 markers. With four matching families to evaluate, more markers may start to allow the sorting and sifting of these matches into genetically distinct branches of the family. This would allow Alice and her brother to further narrow the possibilities for the father of Silas West. Thanks,
