Toot,

I had to laugh when I read your comment regarding the passage you quoted about the Mellungeons. "The Octoroon women bear no children."
Incredible. But the comment fits perfectly inside the kind of twisted world view that could come up with labels like "Quadroon" and "Octoroon" to describe human beings in the first place!

And Arlene, you know... much used to be made in this country of the special pedigree that comes from having been the descendant of one of those folks who came over on The Mayflower from England. That famous ship arrived in 1620. Well, quietly, in 1619, a ship arrived in the early English colonies with a load of African slaves on board. And early in 1621, the first child born to one of those Africans and one of those early European colonists was born - son of a slave and an Irish indentured servant. So, as uncomfortable as our country may always have been about "the mixing of the races", it's been going on since the beginning. And in truth, it's been going on all around the world FOREVER. DNA research shows us ever more clearly that people willing to fight and die for the concept of "racial purity" are tragically obsessed with something that is, and always was, a complete lie - as is the concept of "race" itself.

On another note, Mike, since you started this chain, and you asked about a test that can look at "percentages" of ethnic origin, I think you can order an "admixture test" from Ancestry By DNA or, possibly, Family Tree DNA. It'll give you a result like, "60% European; 20% East Asian; 20% sub-Saharan African." Good luck!
