Clearly, the Taino culture is extinct. There are however numerous DNA studies over the last 5 years which reveal Native American DNA is quite apparent in the Caribbean. Clear assimilation was shown through the mtDNA. For example in Puerto Rico, maternal contribution of Native American DNA to the total gene pool is almost 55%.
