African American DNA Research Forum
In Response To: Re: Jefferson-Hemings ()
This subject has always fascinated me. However, I am tired of it at the same time.
After reading several articles. Some historical, some unbiased, most biased. One such article also pointed out how one of Sally's children was born exactly nine months after a visit from Thomas' relative. With my limited knowledge of biology (and my pregnancy experience)most pregnancies last 40 weeks (roughly 10 months); so how could that relative father that child? However, that tidbit planted a seed of doubt.
I feel that all the DNA test proved was that she had a child with a Jefferson (IMHO, Thomas). Just because Thomas Jefferson was a president doesn't mean that he did not father children with his slave. It doesn't mean that he did not have a long standing relationship with his slave. It does not mean that he didn't love her (would he ever admit to such, never). As we all research our family history we find many secrets. Some where people outright lied (even on their deathbed)as to not have someone's name and/or reputation tarnished.
This is a history mystery that has been carried to the grave with Thomas and Sally. As will some of family secrets that create those horrible brickwalls.
