DNA Genealogy Opens Doors
By: Ashley Langston

Cedar City area residents interested in genealogy will have an interesting opportunity Saturday to connect with others through DNA. Frankie Callison, who works at one of the family history centers in Cedar City, said the family history center has helped the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation coordinate the visit. Tom Smith, a Cedar City resident, located family members through the molecular genealogy system. “It’s been a great thing for me,” he said. According to a flier Callison provided, SMGF databases become more valuable by adding more DNA results.

“The more people who participate, the more valuable the databases become,” the flier reported.

The SMGF will be at the Heritage Center, 105 N. 100 East, from noon to 4 p.m. The public is invited to come do a “mouthwash swish” sample. This can connect them to relatives with similar DNA. “Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation is a non-profit foundation that is creating the world’s leading collection of DNA results and corresponding genealogies,” according to the Web site, According to the flier, representatives of the SMGF will give a presentation about DNA genealogy at 1 p.m.

SMGF will run the DNA for free, but they do charge if the customer wants any further research done,
