African American DNA Research Forum

Re: determining ancestry with small %

Greetings to Vicki and all,

My uncle has researched our family tree extensively and believed that my ggrandfather had "made up" his American Indian ancestry. When I told him about my DNA (autosomal) test, which revealed Native Amer. and Afri. Amer. ancestry, he was surprised but accepted it pretty well. Like you I've been cautious about telling older family members (my uncle is 80+). In my uncle's genealogical research, there's no indication that anybody was anything other than "white." But then there are a couple of brick walls. There's one ancestor that my uncle (and now myself) cannot find a birthplace or birthdate for or his parents' names, etc. I suspect this ancestor may have been African or Native, so I'm trying to find out more about him.

It looks like my ancestors passed for white as soon as they could, which is understandable given the historical conditions. But it sure makes genealogical research difficult!
Regards, Judy
