Re: Haplogroup I (M170)
In Response To: Re: Haplogroup I (M170) ()

Hi Everybody,

My brother tested with th WEST DNA PROJECT because we knew what West family we descended from. My g grandfather, Silas L. West b. 1832 was a slave of the West from Sampson Co., NC. He was stated as Mulatto in the 1860 Slave Schedule and in 1870, still mulatto, but later around the 1900, he was then stated as Black. G grandpa, Silas died in 1904 before the death certificates were issued. We have no proof of his exact birthday, marriage or death date. Silas m. Winifred Barefoot also Mulatto, who was free, her mother was white and father black.

We did not know our Gg grandmother's name. So we stuck with the name that we knew. We are Halogroup I and Group 12, oldest descendant that we matched with was James West, b. 1725 and his parents came from England. We are from the Europeans (Vikings and Balkans areas). We matched 25 out of 25 markers with 5 other sets of West from the USA: NC, SC, LA and MS. We are still looking for the direct connection between these 5 sets of West. I have been researching in the area that my West family resided for years to see if there are any Wills or Deeds that may tie my G grandfather to the slaveowner, but nothing yet. I did find a few deeds where land was deeded to Silas and his brother, Benjamine West.

My question is if I don't know who my gg grandmother was, how can I find out the origin of her birth? This is a dead end for me and my family. Thanks for reading my post.
