I think it comes from a failure to realize that many ethnic groups share some of the features that Native Americans have when the features are looked at individually.
My admixture test shows zero Native American. When I told my cousin this, she was surprised and said that we were supposedly part Indian, from our grandmother. And didn't I remember hearing about "Aunt Lula's high cheekbones which came from our Indian heritage?"
Well, no I had never heard that. And besides, many different ethnic groups have "high" cheekbones, including some from Africa.
