Re: DNA Tribes

I had to go back and read some information off of DNA Tribes' website to get a gist of what they analyze. It appears that they analyze your DNA to get a "big picture" view of your entire genetic makeup. If this is the case, then why didn't your results also reveal African roots?? That is what has gotten me blown away...or confused. They also state, "DNA Tribes is the only available personal ancestry analysis that reveals both the "big picture" of your overall genetic affiliation with a high degree of geographic detail." Affiliation....hmmmmm....
Also, their site states, "Additionally, DNA Tribes Continent Match can predict your major continent of genetic affiliation: European, Sub-Saharan African, East and South Asian, or Native American."
If you want a prediction of what ethnic groups you may be "affiliated" with, then go with them. If you want to know what specific ethnic group(s) your DNA matches by comparing your DNA sequence to thousands of Africans that make up over 25,000 lineages among hundreds of West African ethnic groups, then African Ancestry would be what you want. If you positively feel that your mtDNA might come from somewhere else other than Africa, then you are right, AA would not be for you.
How far back have you been able to trace your family via genealogy research? Where did your family lived? Was their oral history of there being other ethnicities in your family tree? I personally know someone who looks like a Brazilian as well. In fact, I thought she was from Brazil when I first met her. She is dark-skinned with straight hair (I won't say "good" hair. LOL). But, I was totally wrong. She's from New Orleans, and I think her immediate family had migrated down there from places in Mississippi and Alabama.
