Re: MtDna Results

Sonia, I posted the message titled New options, New Questions which includes a link to an article from 2003 about African Ancestry. They match you to specific populations in today's Africa, not 50,000 years ago. I had my own mtDNA tested by African Ancestry and was told that my DNA matched most closely to the Tikar people of Cameroon. My cousin's DNA was tested through Trace Genetics. Their result is "deep ancestry," 50,000 years ago. Not what I wanted. However, if someone's mtDNA or Y-chromosome tests as Native American, Trace Genetics does have a database of Native American population samples to test against, similar to what African Ancestry has of African population samples. And you can also have your DNA tested to give you the varying percentages of different ancestry you have. That would tell you whether or not the oral history you have about Native American ancestry is correct, but could not tell you whether it came from your mother or your father or both. Nor could it give you a tribal identity. I know that Ancestry by DNA does that type of testing.
