Re: DNA Tribes
In Response To: Re: DNA Tribes ()

Let's say that I've traced back to a 4th-great-grandmother who I speculate was born in Africa....or her parents were born in Africa. This speculation is brought on by the fact that she bore a West African name that is linked to several ethnic groups in Sierra Leone who speak the same language that her name originates from.

Having a strong desire to uncover the specifics concerning the possible African origins of several family lines, will FTDNA alone will be able to pinpoint an African nation where a specific line in my family likely hailed from? Or since I am only interested in this family line at the moment, would it be better to test, through African Ancestry, my 4th cousin's mtDNA who is a mother-to-mother-to-mother descendant of my 4th-great grandmother? How can I benefit from testing with FTDNA? If I do both FTDNA and African Ancestry, what are the costs compared to just going with African Ancestry. Will I be paying the full price for FTDNA and then a discounted price with African Ancestry for them to analyze the results I got from FTDNA? If I do the latter, wouldn't that be more money out of my pocket?

Thanks,
Mel
