I agree w/ the poster who stated that we tend to look at the skin color as an important DNA feature, where in reality, there are only a tiny amount of letters on the tens of thousands in your genetic code that determine pigment. Finger shape, jaw set, height, disease tendencies, and teeth are all genetic features we overlook in the West because we were conditioned that complexion was the prime racial classifier.
Forensic scientists can identify the ethnicity of ancient skeletons, or 1920's murder victims, none of whom have skin any longer.
