Oh another perspective on this whole Native American Ancestry topic is that, many people may have thought they had this ancestry due to the phenotypical appearance of a grandmother or parent. However, I think many of these folks were just biracial white/black or Afro/Euro, but many of our people didn't want to mention the White "oppresor" ancestry, but gladly mentioned the "Indian" ancestry. On the PBS American Lives DVD, even Quincy Jones thought he had Native American ancestry, only to find out that the ancestor he thought was Native American was biracial. So a lot of this mistaken Native American ancestry comes from simple mistaken identity! I think many of our people really truly thought they had Native American ancestors because they looked like it.
