It really depends on what you want to accomplish.
1) If you're trying to find out about your African ancestry then there's only one company that will be able to match your results with a present-day tribe. Use African Ancestry ( www.africanancestry.com ) is that's your goal.
2) If you're not sure of your ethnic make-up or need some more clarity then you'll want to do what's called the biogegraphical admixture test. Several companies do it and give results as a percentage of European, Sub-Saharan African, East Asian and Native American populations. I used DNA Print Genomics ( www.ancestrybydna.com ) as they pioneered this particular test and have a good reputation.
3) If you're trying to find out more about your Native ancestry then try one of the companies that specialize in this test. Trace Genetics is one. There are others. Look over the posts on this board for other suggestions.
4) If you want to submit your results for a surname project as I plan to do, I have recently found out that you'll need to do a Y-chromosome test on at least 25 markers, 37 would be even better. Again, several companies do this test. Family Tree DNA ( www.familytreedna.com ) is one that is pushed by Ancestry.com and seems to have a good reputation.
Hope this helps. Take the time to read the other posts here as some state which companies NOT to use for a specific purpose.
