This is a rather interesting interview about a system set up to allow white society to get around laws that made it illegal for a person of color to marry a white during the French and Spanish colonial periods in Louisiana called Plaçage

This system I believe may have produced many of my mixed race ancestors that I've been researching. A very unique aspect to my ancestral family history that have somehow turned into many of the family's secret shame.

I would be interested to hear from others who have found similar family stories of ancestral lines that were formed by relationship start from this particular kind of arrangements.

And isn't it very interesting how we still hold on to certain traditions that is masked as coming out opportunities for our young daughters today.
